What is LASIK/Laser Vision Correction?
Laser vision correction involves using a precise computer-controlled laser to gently reshape the cornea, which allows light rays to focus more directly on the retina. This can ultimately reduce your dependence on corrective lenses. Laser vision correction is a proven treatment option for certain kinds of vision correction, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
The surgeons at Edmond Regional Eye Associates have selected the Star S4 IR™ Excimer Laser with Iris Recognition and CustomVue™ Technology for its first class safety profile and exceptional results. CustomVue™ laser vision correction is an innovative procedure that incorporates the WaveScan WaveFront™ System technology and the patented, FDA-approved VISX laser to create a highly effective, personalized treatment plan for patients. Without custom LASIK, doctors must rely on one-size-fits-all, traditional laser vision correction, which achieves great results but is not nearly as precise as CustomVue™.
LASIK, or Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis, is accomplished by removing tissue beneath the surface of the cornea. First, a device called a microkeratome lifts a thin layer of the cornea. This instrument creates a precise layer by working very much like a carpenter's plane. This layer, or flap, is then folded back. Next, a cool beam of laser light gently reshapes the outer surface of the exposed cornea. The laser treatment typically takes less than one minute, and the flap is replaced in its original position.
What can I expect?
LASIK is performed on an outpatient basis and takes only a few minutes. You will remain awake during the procedure and the only anesthetic you will need is eye drops. Anticipate being in the laser center about one hour on the day of the procedure. Your family or friends may watch the procedure if you desire. Most patients experience improved vision the same day and are able to return to work the very next day. You will take an antibiotic drop and a steroid a few times a day for about a week following your procedure. You will also use artificial tear drops for comfort. Some of the advantages of LASIK are little or no postoperative discomfort, waking with good vision the following morning, being back at work quickly, and eye drops are usually only needed for about a week. The drops may be adjusted based upon each individual's healing response.
